The television industry has seen a significant shift in recent years, with many daily soaps ending abruptly just a few months after their launch. This trend, once rare, has now become alarmingly common. Shows that used to run for years are now struggling to survive even a season. Deepika Singh, who currently plays the female lead in Mangal Lakshmi, shares her thoughts on the unpredictable nature of television today and the emotional toll it takes on artistes.
Reflecting on her own journey in the industry, Deepika says, “When I entered the industry in 2011, even back then shows used to end abruptly, so this isn’t something completely new. But yes, it’s shocking how the lifespan of shows has further reduced — now some end within just one or two months. Earlier, even low-rated shows would last at least three to four months.”
She adds that beyond the business implications, there is also an emotional side to a show shutting down. She shares, “I feel sad when a show goes off air because I know how many people pin their hopes on it. Working together creates a bond among the team. Whether I know someone personally or not, when any show ends, I feel bad.”
Bringing in her academic perspective, she says, “I’m an MBA graduate, and I understand that like any business, a show will only survive if it’s profitable. That’s just the reality. TV, too, has to be profitable to continue.”
However, she maintains a positive outlook. “Every low phase teaches you something. We all know some things work, and some don’t. We must take it as an experience, learn from it, and move forward with those lessons to do better next time,” she shares.
On being asked whether she feels pressured as the face of a show, she concludes with grace: “I never feel that pressure. I believe in living one day at a time. I pray for the prosperity of those around me and myself, and focus on the present rather than worrying about the future.”
