The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Delhi over the weekend. Following Thursday’s showers, which brought relief from the heat, IMD’s weather bulletin forecasts thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph at isolated places across Delhi and other states on June 28th. Additionally, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Delhi on both June 29th and June 30th.
According to the IMD’s definitions, heavy rain in Delhi is characterised by rainfall between 64.5 mm and 124.4 mm in a day, while very heavy rain ranges from 124.5 mm to 244.4 mm in a day.
An independent weather agency has forecasted that the monsoon is likely to arrive in Delhi over the upcoming weekend. The IMD has also warned of localised flooding on roads, water-logging in low-lying areas, and the potential closure of underpasses due to the expected very heavy rainfall in Delhi on June 29th and 30th. These conditions highlight the need for precautionary measures and readiness for significant rainfall impacts in the national capital during this period.
The monsoon current usually enters Delhi within the timeframe of June 27th to June 29th. Last year, it arrived on June 26th, and the first monsoon showers of 2022 were officially recorded on June 30th, according to official data.
