Hook In 3 Seconds, Deliver In One Shot: Sushmita Banik On Micro Dramas

Actress Sushmita Banik shares insights on the rising popularity of micro dramas, where emotions and twists must land within seconds to hold attention.

She calls the format a creative launchpad for new talent in today’s digital era.

Sushmita Banik, who made her television debut with Janani in 2021 on Ishara TV and later appeared in Dheeraj Dhoopar’s Sherdil Shergill in 2022, believes that micro dramas are the future in today’s fast-paced entertainment landscape.

When asked how micro dramas differ from traditional storytelling, Sushmita explained, “Micro drama is basically a fast-forward version of storytelling.

With limited time, you have to go straight into the emotion and twist. Yahaan luxury nahi hai ki dheere-dheere emotion build ho… yahaan to first shot se hi believable hona padta hai. Sabse pehle teen second mein pakadna zaroori hai  chhota conflict, ek twist aur strong climax… yahi formula hai. Kam baatein, zyada visuals.”

She emphasised how the acting approach must shift to meet the demands of this format. She shared, “An actor needs to deliver from the very first shot. In micro dramas, if you don’t hook the audience immediately with emotion, they’ll simply move on.”

Discussing the creative process of scripting and shooting for micro formats, she said, “Chhote format mein detailing ka scope kam hota hai, so the focus is on the script. There can be one conflict and one climax both need to be strong. Visuals carry the story more than dialogues, and that’s how you keep it engaging.”

Sushmita also sees micro dramas as a launchpad for new talent. She said, “Definitely! This is the easiest entry. You can showcase your creativity even on a low budget. Many people have been discovered through this.”

On the power of virality and immediate audience response, she added, “They already are [popular]. People want snackable content, and that’s perfect. Viral hone se instant feedback bhi milta hai, which is a part of the learning process.”

She concluded by acknowledging both formats, saying, “Snackable content ka craze badh raha hai, but long stories will always have their place too.”
