Laughter Chef’s Harpal Singh Sokhi Celebrates Women’s Impact On The Culinary World Ahead Of Women’s Day

As Women’s Day approaches, Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi, currently seen on Laughter Chefs, takes a moment to reflect on the profound impact women have had on the culinary world. He believes the love for food starts in a mother’s kitchen, and this Women’s Day, he emphasizes the importance of celebrating women’s culinary talents. He says, “In India, cooking has traditionally been a woman’s domain. They have been the ones to teach us the basics, pass down their skills, and instill a love for food that begins in a mother’s kitchen.”

Highlighting the vital role women play in shaping culinary traditions, he says, “As children, we learn about food from our mothers. When we grow into chefs, they remain our first teachers, instilling their passion for cooking in us. Women bring a sense of comfort, harmony, and creativity to the culinary world. Their expertise, particularly in areas requiring artistic precision, adds beauty and perfection to their craft. This is why celebrating Women’s Day in the culinary industry is so important.”

For Harpal, his inspiration comes from the women in his life.

He says, “I don’t have to look far for inspiration — it comes from my mother’s, my wife’s, and my mother-in-law’s kitchens. I’ve learned so much from them, and they play a key role in testing my food. When I need feedback on anything — whether it’s frozen, packaged food, or dishes from my restaurant — I have my in-house critics: my wife and daughters. They always give me honest feedback, and I trust their opinions. Whenever I launch a new dish, my first step is always to have my wife taste it. If she approves, I know I’m on the right track. These women have not only shaped my cooking but also taught me the passion for selecting the right ingredients, the art of slow cooking, and the importance of attention to detail in every dish.”

Discussing the role of women in the food industry, Harpal is hopeful for more recognition. He says, “Many women have risen to the top of the culinary world, becoming executive chefs in prestigious hotels and restaurants across the country. It’s inspiring to see women take charge in the culinary industry, and I believe they deserve full credit for their contributions. It’s time for more women to step forward, gain recognition, and prove that this field belongs to them just as much as anyone else. It’s heartening to see more women in leadership roles across the food industry. I’ve witnessed a surge in women-led restaurants, from classic establishments to well-known chains. These women are making significant strides, and their success is inspiring.”

He adds, “While many women chefs, like Madhur Jaffrey, Tarla Dalal, and Nita Mehta, may not have professional training, their influence is undeniable through their books and recipes. Professionally, women like Manisha Bhasin, Meenakshi Krishnan, Pankaj Bhadauria, Shipra Khanna, and Garima Arora have achieved tremendous success and set new benchmarks in the industry. Ritu Dalmia, who’s been running a successful restaurant for years, and India’s Michelin star chef, are prime examples of how women are setting high standards in the culinary world. Furthermore, women running food businesses, such as Biryani chains, have shown remarkable entrepreneurial spirit.”
