Madhuri Dixit addressed media at the trailer launch of her new web show Mrs Deshpande.
The trailer launch for the upcoming JioHotstar series, Mrs. Deshpande, was launched in Mumbai.
Actress Madhuri Dixit plays the lead character, a serial killer. Directed by Nagesh Kukunoor and produced by Applause Entertainment, the show is an official adaptation of the French thriller La Mante. Priyanshu Chatterjee and Siddharth Chandekar also play key roles in the show.
Addressing the media, Dixit spoke about her motivation for taking on such a dark role. “I’ve always liked to portray women in a powerful way. I believe in women empowerment and whenever I’ve played strong women characters, I’ve really pushed myself hard,” she stated.
Applause Entertainment and director Nagesh Kukunoor previously collaborated on the show City of Dreams (Jio hotstar).
Kukunoor elaborated on the genesis of the show. “When Applause and I started talking and they gave me the French show, two things hit me. The main character and more importantly the relationships. The relationships were so wonderful that I felt an Indian adaptation would be very good.”
He confirmed that Dixit was his only choice, saying, “The key thing was who will play the titular character? And right from the time we started writing the show, there was only one name, Madhuri Dixit. Once that thing popped in our heads, we started writing for her.” He expressed his happiness, noting, “I’m so happy to have worked with Madhuri, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Siddharth Chandekar with whom I worked on City of Dreams.”
Actor Siddharth Chandekar, who plays a stern cop in the series, shared his experience of working alongside the star actress. “You simply cannot take your eyes of her (Madhuri Dixit). She’s wonderful. This time, yes, she has amazed us all, but she has also scared us. She’s pretty good in the show.”
Chandekar also credited Kukunoor for diversifying his acting roles. “In Marathi, I’ve often played a simple, good boy. But Nagesh Kukunoor is the first director who cast me to play a very bad boy in City of Dreams and a very stern cop in Mrs Deshpande.”
He concluded on a high note, praising the overall production: “When you get Nagesh Kukunoor as a director and Madhuri Dixit and Priyanshu Chatterjee as coactors, with Applause producing the show, and Jio Hotstar streaming it, what else do you want? What comes out of it is a brilliant show.”
The JioHotstar series is set to stream from December 19.
