Rinku Dhawan opens up about playing Rajni, a powerful and ambitious political figure in Anupamaa.
She explains how this character will alter current equations and introduce greater depth to the storyline
Rinku Dhawan, who has recently entered Star Plus’ Anupamaa as Rajni, says her character is set to introduce a compelling political and emotional shift in the popular show. Portraying a nagarsevika, Rinku describes Rajni as a complex and layered woman, neither entirely good nor bad, who mirrors ambition, authority, and the realities of power dynamics in today’s world.
Speaking about the impact Rajni will have on the storyline, Rinku believes the character’s presence will significantly alter existing equations. She says, “Rajni can’t be judged through a simple right-or-wrong lens. She represents power, ambition, and the reality of how politics works. Her presence will definitely shake equations and challenge a lot of characters, including Anupamaa.”
While Rajni is sharp, strategic, and constantly thinking several steps ahead, Rinku admits she is quite different in real life. Drawing a contrast between herself and her on-screen persona, the actor shares, “I’m not calculative at all. Rajni thinks ten steps ahead, whereas I go more with my heart. That’s what makes playing her so challenging and exciting for me.”
Portraying a political figure required careful preparation, and Rinku reveals that she closely observed real-life women politicians to bring authenticity to the role. “What struck me was how authority came through in both their presence and the way they spoke. Rajni doesn’t hesitate or second-guess; she owns every room she walks into, and that was a key aspect I wanted to portray accurately,” she explains.
Talking about the audience response, Rinku says viewers have quickly picked up on Rajni’s layered personality. “People are intrigued by her. Some love her confidence, while others love to hate her and that’s the best compliment for an actor,” she laughs.
As for what lies ahead, Rinku hints that Rajni’s journey has only just begun. “With time, the role will reveal richer emotional layers while delving further into its political complexities. Viewers will see sides of her that may surprise them,” she signs off.
