Hindi film singer and actress, Sulakshana Pandit, who passed away on November 6 at Nanavati Hospital, shared a close bond with the late legendary singer, Mahendra Kapoor and his family. Kapoor’s son, actor-singer Rohan Kapoor fondly recalls their long association and the warmth she brought into their lives.
He recalled, “Sulakshana Pandit was a dear sister. She was close to us because her father was close to my father. As a kid, she used to come to our house and play with my sister. She used to go to shows with my father and even I used to perform at some of them.”
He fondly recounted one of his most cherished memories. “She was a simple and noble soul. When she bought her first car, a Mercedes, after she became an actor, she came directly to our house. She was so proud of it and wanted to show that she was standing on her own feet. She was a very fine human being and the backbone of the whole family. She was a fabulous artist and worked really hard.”
The singer-actress had been bedridden for the last 16 years and was being cared for by youngest sister, actress Vijayta Pandit and her family. Rohan remembers meeting her during her better days at her Juhu residence. “I used to meet her at King’s Apartment where she lived,” he said, adding, “I called her Didi, because she was much older than me. Vijayta and her husband (the late music composer) Adesh Shrivastava looked after her very well during her health issues. Adesh was a fine soul. He initiated the whole effort to take care of Sulakshana Didi.”
Sulakshana Pandit’s last rites were performed at Pawan Hans crematorium in suburban Juhu on Friday afternoon. Among those in attendance were actors Shabana Azmi and Poonam Dhillon as well as family members Vijayata Pandit, and music composer brother Lalit Pandit, one half of the Jatin-Lalit duo.
