Actor Brings Emotional Depth to the Character of Suraj
Sambhaji Sasane is receiving widespread appreciation for his performance as Suraj in the Marathi film Rubaab, which has successfully entered its fifth week in theatres. Known for his work in films like Wagherya, B.E. Rojgaar, and Love & Shukla, Sasane delivers a powerful portrayal of a complex and emotionally layered character.
Speaking about Suraj, Sambhaji Sasane described him as a self-respecting young man with a commanding personality and deep emotional intensity. According to the actor, Suraj carries unresolved emotions, particularly due to a strained relationship with his father, who opposed his decision to marry his first love, Madhuri.
Preparing for the Role by Living the Character’s World
To authentically portray Suraj, Sambhaji Sasane spent more than three weeks in Atpadi, where the story is set. During this time, he observed the lifestyle, dialect, and everyday routines of the local community to fully understand the character’s environment.
The actor explained that experiencing the region firsthand helped him naturally absorb the rhythm of life in the town, making his portrayal more realistic and grounded.
Director’s Unique Storytelling Approach
Sambhaji Sasane also revealed that director Shekhar Rankhambe uses an unconventional method while working with actors. Instead of distributing written scripts, the director narrates the story repeatedly to help actors internalize their characters.
According to Sambhaji Sasane, this approach allowed him to focus on understanding the emotional journey of the story rather than memorising lines from a script.
A Fight Scene That Turned Unexpectedly Real
The actor also shared an intense behind-the-scenes experience while filming an action sequence. Although the fight choreography was initially rehearsed with professional stunt performers, they were unavailable on the day of the shoot.
As a result, the scene was filmed with local boys who had no prior experience with choreographed action. In the excitement of filming, some punches landed harder than intended, leaving Sasane with sore ribs and back pain for nearly a month.
Despite the unexpected injuries, the actor recalled the experience fondly and appreciated the enthusiasm of the locals who participated in the shoot.

Reflecting on the film’s reception, Sasane shared that the audience response has been extremely encouraging. Many viewers have connected with Suraj’s emotional journey and his perspective on love, pride, and relationships.
