Parleen Gill on International Women’s Day: Respect, Equality and Appreciation Should Go Beyond Just One Day

Singer Parleen Gill, who rose to prominence as a finalist on Indian Idol Season 3, believes that Women’s Day is not just about celebration but about acknowledging the strength and resilience women bring to society every day.

Having performed on international stages across Dubai, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries, and shared the stage with icons like Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Mika, K.K., Sunidhi Chauhan and Shankar Mahadevan, the singer says his perspective on Women’s Day is deeply shaped by the strong women he has seen around him.

Parleen Gill Reflects on the True Meaning of International Women’s Day

Speaking about the significance of International Women’s Day on March 8, Parleen Gill says, “I think Women’s Day is a beautiful reminder, not just a celebration, but an acknowledgement. It’s a day to recognise the strength, resilience, compassion and silent sacrifices that women make in every sphere of life. For me, it’s not about grand gestures; it’s about respect — respect at home, at work, and in society. Having grown up seeing strong women around me, I genuinely feel they deserve appreciation not just one day, but every single day.”

Reflecting on how the definition of an empowered woman has changed over time, the singer feels that empowerment today is far more layered than it once was. Parleen Gill said, “Earlier, empowerment was largely seen as being limited to financial independence. Today, I feel it has become much deeper and more personal.

An empowered woman is someone who has the freedom to make her own choices — whether that’s building a career, running a home, doing both, or choosing a completely different path. Empowerment today means emotional strength, self-respect, and the confidence to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ without fear,” Parleen Gill explains.

Equality at Work: Fair Pay and Opportunities Matter

He further adds that equality in the professional world is a crucial part of empowerment. He said, “In the professional world, it means equal opportunities, fair pay, and being valued for talent rather than gender. True empowerment is when a woman doesn’t have to prove her worth constantly — it is simply acknowledged,” Parleen Gill says.

When asked whether Women’s Day is still necessary today, Parleen believes the day continues to hold strong relevance. “I think as long as inequality exists anywhere in the world, a day like Women’s Day is needed. It creates awareness, sparks conversations, and reminds society of the journey still left,” he shares.

Recalling his childhood perception of the day, he adds, “When I first heard about it as a child, I honestly thought it was just like Mother’s Day — a sweet celebration. But as I grew older, I understood the history and struggles behind it, and I realised it stands for much more than flowers and wishes. It stands for voice, rights, and recognition.”

Parleen Gill on International Men’s Day and Gender Balance

Responding to the common question about why there is no similar concept of Men’s Day, Parleen points out that both genders deserve appreciation and understanding. “Actually, there is an International Men’s Day as well, and I believe both days serve a purpose. It’s not about competition between genders; it’s about appreciation and awareness. Women’s Day highlights issues that historically needed attention, while men also face pressures and expectations in society that deserve discussion,” he says.

Parleen Gill concludes with a message of balance and mutual respect. “In the end, I believe it’s not about men versus women; it’s about mutual respect, balance, and supporting each other. Society progresses when both walk together.”
