Actress Swaroopa Ghosh calls for a more meaningful portrayal of bold content in films and OTT, emphasizing truth over sensationalism.
She believes subtlety and substance should replace gratuitous scenes, especially in stories tackling real-life issues.
Under the guise of creating realistic content, many OTT shows and films often cross the line when portraying bold themes. Actress Swaroopa Ghosh, currently seen in Sony TVβs Aami Dakini and last seen in Jaat, believes thereβs a fine balance between reality and entertainmentβand that many scenes often feel unnecessary.
She says, βIt all starts with how we define boldness. To me, boldness means expressing truths that have been suppressed for too long and taking action to move forward. Unfortunately, I canβt say that Bollywood or OTT platforms always reflect that.β
Swaroopa Ghosh adds, βAny art form reflects or speaks about society. Films and OTT content are no different. But for the sake of entertainment, they often blur the lines between truth, reality, and drama. Most of the time, we seem more driven by mass appeal than by truth.β
With many shows now exploring real-life issues like divorce or family conflict, Swaroopa Ghosh points out that these arenβt new topicsβjust more openly discussed today.
βRelationship issues have always existed. Films like Aavishkar, Duriyaan, Ijaazat, Arth, and many regional movies have tackled these themes. Whatβs changed is societyβs willingness to accept them. Itβs not about increased exposure but rather coming to terms with reality,β she explains.
She further emphasizes the need for responsible content, especially for younger audiences. She says, βItβs important to control the usage of such content and help people understand whatβs appropriate and whatβs not.β
Speaking about her personal choices, Swaroopa Ghosh says,
βAs I mentioned earlier, it depends on how ‘boldness’ is defined. Is it the concept or the roleβor just something meant to titillate? Iβm definitely not interested in the latter. Thankfully, at my age, that expectation doesnβt exist. The same goes for intimacy on screen. I prefer subtle, nuanced portrayals, which demand layered and mature performances.β
