Producer Sunjoy Waddhwa reflects on the early careers of Vikrant Massey and Yami Gautam, praising their talent and growth in the film industry.
He also shares insights on the enduring relevance of television and his latest show Meri Bhavya Life.
Celebrated TV producer Sunjoy Waddhwa, founder of the acclaimed production company Sphereorigins, has been behind some of Indian television’s most memorable shows, such as Balika Vadhu, Saat Phere – Saloni Ka Safar, Saraswatichandra, and Gangaa. Two actors who began their journeys with his shows, Vikrant Massey and Yami Gautam, have gone on to establish themselves in Bollywood, and Sunjoy couldn’t be prouder.
Recalling their early days, Sunjoy Waddhwa said, “Yami came from Chandigarh and impressed us right from her audition. She played a princess in Raajkumar Aaryyan, and even back then, we could see her potential for films.”
Vikrant Massey was so impressive that we extended his role
Speaking about Vikrant Massey , Sunjoy Waddhwa added, “He joined Balika Vadhu later, but he was so impressive that we extended his role. He also starred in our film Un Hazaaron Ke Naam, based on the 26/11 attacks. He’s an exceptional performer with a truly humble and warm personality.”
Every format has its unique audience
Having produced content across television, OTT, and film, Sunjoy weighed in on the long-standing debate about television’s relevance. “It’s a myth that TV is dying. People are still watching, channels are still commissioning shows, and we’re continuing to create them,” Sunjoy Waddhwa said.
He emphasised that each medium has its own strengths. “Some stories are best suited for TV, others for films or digital platforms. Every format has its unique audience.”
Sunjoy Waddhwa has also made his mark in the digital arena through Sphereorigins, producing engaging web series such as Ranneeti, Your Honor, and Dark 7 White. His newest venture, Salakaar, promises to be an exciting addition to his diverse body of work.
