“We Need More Conversations, But That Cannot Happen If We Don’t Create A Safe Ambience For It”: Sumit Kaul On FSex

Actor Sumit Kaul opens up about FSex – The Free Speech Experiment, a bold, unscripted series sparking conversations on diverse topics in front of a live audience. He stresses the importance of creating a secure environment for honest conversations, while also underlining that free speech carries the deeper purpose of seeking truth through accountability and openness.

Actor Sumit Kaul, known for his compelling screen presence and layered performances in projects such as Haider, Laila Majnu, Article 370, Tanaav, and Tenali Rama, is now leading the charge on FSex–The Free Speech Experiment. The series is conceptualised and produced by Abhigyan Jha, with whom Sumit shares the stage. Together, they pick random topics in front of a live audience and dive into deep, unscripted discussions, each offering distinct perspectives.

Speaking about the intent behind FSex, Sumit Kaul explained, “Through FSex, we are trying to correct the understanding of free speech and present a search-based discussion model, which can lead to more healthy conversations. We need more conversations, but that cannot happen if we don’t create a safe ambience for it.”

The actor views free speech as a hard-won evolution of human rights, underscoring its significance. He said, “It has come due to tremendous sacrifices made by our previous generations.” He believes that while free speech is indeed a powerful privilege, its true value lies in how responsibly it is exercised. “Unfortunately, this is something many people tend to overlook today. The responsibility is a greater aspect than the right itself,” Sumit Kaul added.

Sumit Kaul also noted how the original purpose of free speech is often overlooked. He said, “It is the allowing of multiple points of view, all in the search for truth. It’s the search for truth that allows us to be open to other views, and the cementing of views only takes you away from the truth and only creates friction.”

Reflecting on the dynamic between him and Abhigyan, Sumit Kaul added, “Most of the discussions are impromptu. None of us are experts on any of the topics, and we don’t claim to be either. But we are both eternal students, and that allows for a very intellectually stimulating discussion between us, which includes audience participation as well.”
