As the world observes Anti-Tobacco Day, entrepreneur and content creator Gauravv Saxena shares his sharp insights into the growing concerns around tobacco use—especially the glamorisation of smoking among youth and in entertainment media.

He candidly acknowledges that for many people, smoking has become more than just a habit—it’s a symbol of fitting in. “Smoking is often seen as a way to appear more sophisticated, adventurous, or rebellious,” he says, adding, “The media often plays a role in this by romanticising smoking, making it look like a gateway to a glamorous lifestyle.”

Discussing the shift from smoking in private to public spaces, Gauravv Saxena reflects on how cultural acceptance has changed over the years. He says, “Social media has made such behavior more visible—and sometimes even celebrated. Peer influence, media portrayal, and the casual attitude toward smoking in public settings have all contributed to this shift.”

Gauravv Saxena expresses concern over the depiction of smoking in films and television. “I definitely have reservations,” he admits, and adds, “When smoking is shown without context or consequences, it undermines the serious health risks involved. Yes, storytelling is important, but so is responsibility.”

While every tobacco product comes with a health warning, Gauravv Saxena feels that the message alone is not enough. He says, “It’s a step in the right direction, but it often gets lost in the drama or emotional appeal of the scene. Real change comes from education, awareness, and consistent cultural messaging that doesn’t contradict itself.”

When asked about the impact of graphic anti-smoking advertisements, Gauravv Saxena points out that their effect is variable. He says, “They can make a powerful impact, especially when they evoke a strong emotional response. But if the audience is already desensitised or dismissive, the message might not land the way it’s intended.”

Despite growing awareness and multiple bans, hookah lounges continue to thrive. Gauravv Saxena attributes this to misconceptions and social appeal. He shares, “People often believe hookah is safer than cigarettes. Add to that the ambiance, music, and social vibe of hookah bars—it’s easy to see why they’re popular. But that doesn’t mean they’re harmless.”

Gauravv Saxena also notes the challenge in enforcing bans. He says, “There’s a lack of awareness about the actual health risks, and the casual, cultural attitude around hookah makes strict regulation difficult.”

On the question of how to change public perception, Gauravv Saxena believes that celebrities have a major role to play. “Public figures hold influence—whether they realize it or not. By supporting anti-smoking campaigns and speaking about their own choices, they can make people think differently. Stronger messaging from people in the spotlight can help change the narrative,” he shares.

On Anti-Tobacco Day, Gauravv Saxena’s message is clear: style isn’t about lighting a cigarette or posing with a hookah—it’s about being informed, aware, and responsible.
