Actor Saanand Verma reflects on how OTT platforms have reshaped Bollywood, making audiences more selective about theatrical experiences. He highlights the industry’s unpredictability, stressing that strong storytelling and buzz are key to a film’s success in today’s evolving landscape.
OTT platforms have undoubtedly changed the game for Bollywood, especially with many films struggling to perform well at the box office. Saanand Verma explains that the uncertainty surrounding whether a film is worth the expensive ticket prices has led people to wait for movies to be available for free on OTT platforms.
Saanand Verma shares, “There’s no no guarantee that a film released in theatres will be a mind-blowing experience. This uncertainty makes people hesitant to spend money on expensive theatre tickets. In India, an average family finds it quite costly to visit multiplexes.
With OTT offering an endless variety of content at a much lower cost, families are less inclined to go to theatres unless they’re sure the experience will be worth it.”
Saanand Verma adds, “People will only go to theatres when they feel the film offers something unique that can’t be replicated at home. There’s also a growing trend of re-releasing classic, well-made hit films in theatres, allowing the younger generation to experience them on the big screen.
These outings create a special experience for families, partners, or friends, and this trend of revisiting timeless films is likely to continue. It offers that unique cinematic experience that people crave.”
When asked about the last films he watched in theatres, Saanand Verma says, “I saw Stree 2 and Vedaa because I admire Rajkummar Rao and John Abraham. For a film to succeed, it needs a strong story, solid production, and real entertainment value.

If the cast includes newcomers, the content has to be extraordinary, with powerful marketing and buzz. The film’s poster should immediately grab attention, especially if it introduces fresh faces.
The cinematography needs to be exceptional, the story fresh and engaging, every location visually stunning, and the camera work impeccable. Special effects should impress, and every department must deliver top-notch work.
Whether the film features newcomers or established stars, their performances should be outstanding. There’s something special about a film with newcomers that gets a theatrical release; without strong audience interest, even the best film will struggle in theatres.”
Saanand Verma also points out that a combination of factors contributes to a film’s success. “If the film is good and a strong buzz is built around it, the film is likely to succeed. If the buzz is well-managed and the product is of high quality, the film will definitely hit the mark.
So, it’s essential that the core of the film is in the right place. The story matters deeply, but even with a great narrative and strong filmmaking, the outcome can still be unpredictable.
Take Mera Naam Joker and Sholay — both weren’t initially understood by the audience, but gained appreciation years later. The film industry is unpredictable, much like climate change affecting businesses; sometimes, external factors are beyond control.
So many elements play a role in a film’s succes and this unpredictability will always exist in the industry. In this business, nothing is ever certain.”
