Shilpa Shinde On Her OTT Experience: “It Turned Out To Be Just Like Its Name—Over the Top”

Shilpa Shinde reflects on her disillusionment with OTT platforms, citing a lack of creative satisfaction and growing contractual pressures.

Despite her willingness to work, she’s waiting for roles that truly align with her values and talent.

Post her Bigg Boss 11 victory, where she won both the title and audience admiration, Shilpa Shinde began choosing her projects with much more caution and care. While she briefly shifted her focus to OTT platforms with appearances in shows like Paurashpur and Kadiyaan, the actress now finds herself once again in wait for meaningful roles that offer creative satisfaction.

Shilpa Shinde had high hopes for OTT. “I thought I’d get to play a variety of roles on OTT,” she shares candidly. She adds, “When you’re an actor on TV, you end up stuck in daily soaps. Then you’re just working for EMIs. Sure, the money keeps coming, but there’s no job satisfaction in that. So, I thought OTT would give me that creative satisfaction. But OTT turned out to be just like its name—‘over the top.’”

She further explains, “Our Indian audience has gotten used to Indian content, so OTT feels extreme to them.”

Shilpa Shinde also raises concerns about the growing trend of including unnecessary intimate scenes on OTT shows. “When signing a contract for OTT shows, there are too many terms and conditions—even when the character doesn’t require such scenes,” she says.

Shilpa Shinde adds, “And a contract is a big deal. If a role doesn’t demand it, why should I sign it? I’m very scared of such conditions because once I sign, I can’t back out. So what’s the point of doing OTT work in such cases?”

The actress also points out the cliquish nature of casting in the industry. “It’s not like compelling stories don’t exist in the industry. There are—but they don’t reach me. I don’t get them. These days, everything happens within teams and camps,” Shilpa Shinde says, adding, “I’ve done so much work already that I can’t keep struggling, meeting, and networking just to get a role. I still try, but I can’t push myself too far.”

While Shilpa Shinde is open to work, it’s clear that she values substance, authenticity, and respect for the actor’s comfort zone—something she feels is often missing in today’s OTT landscape.
