Sushmita Banik: Durga Puja Is Not Just A Festival, It’s An Emotion

Actress Sushmita Banik opens up about the emotional and cultural importance of Durga Puja in her life, calling it more than just a festival.

From childhood memories in Kolkata to quieter celebrations in Mumbai, she reflects on the spirit of togetherness and strength the occasion brings.

Actress Sushmita Banik, who made her television debut with Janani on Ishara TV in 2021, sees Durga Puja as more than a festive celebration it’s a deeply personal and cultural experience rooted in her Bengali identity. “When the dhaak starts playing and the scent of dhunuchi fills the air, it feels like Maa Durga has really returned home,” she shares, adding, “In Bengal, we see Durga Puja as Maa’s homecoming like a daughter visiting her parents after a long time. That joy is reflected in every street, every home, and every heart.”

For Sushmita Banik, Durga Puja is as much about people as it is about prayers. She says, “No matter where you live, everyone tries to return home during this time. Families come together, old friends meet again, and bonds feel renewed. It’s about celebrating life and love with those who matter most.”

Reminiscing about her childhood, she adds, “Pandal hopping till late at night, wearing new clothes every day, enjoying bhog and sweets those five days felt like magic. They’re still the happiest memories of my life.”

Now living in Mumbai for the past eight years, Sushmita Banik admits she misses Kolkata’s grand celebrations. “The energy in the city during Durga Puja is unmatched. Every light, every smile carries a special kind of magic. Though I celebrate in Mumbai with family, nothing compares to Kolkata’s vibe,” she shares.

For her, the festival also carries a larger message. She says, “Maa Durga teaches us to stay strong through tough times. She reminds us that good always triumphs over evil and that belief gives us strength.”

Wishing her fans, Sushmita Banik signs off, “Durga Puja is a celebration of culture and spirit. It’s not just worship it’s living life in full color. Wishing everyone a joyful and blessed Puja.”
