The Creative Vision Behind Anjali Phougat’s Designs
Indian-origin, US-based designer Anjali Phougat does not think about fashion the way most people do. For her, what you wear is never just what you wear. It is a statement, a value system, a form of communication that goes far deeper than trends or aesthetics.
Ask her to define fashion, and she does not reach for the obvious answers. Anjali Phougat said, “Fashion, for me, is a language of the soul. It is how inner emotion, culture, and identity take visible form. It is not just clothing, it is storytelling, energy, and expression without words.”
When asked to distil her personal style into just three words, she does not hesitate. Anjali Phougat said, “Elegant. Spiritual. Timeless.”
Stepping into the entertainment and global fashion space changed the way she looked at her own craft, shifting her focus from the surface to the substance beneath it. Anjali Phougat said, “Entering the entertainment and global fashion space has refined my perspective. Earlier, I focused on aesthetics; now I focus on meaning. Every look I create or wear carries intention, whether it’s cultural storytelling, empowerment, or spiritual symbolism.”
Anjali Phougat on Fashion as a Reflection of Identity and Emotion
Fashion, for her, is not something she switches on for an occasion. It runs through everything. Anjali Phougat said, “Fashion is an extension of my daily consciousness. It reflects my inner discipline, my creativity, and my values, especially sustainability, mindfulness, and respect for artisanship.”
On the question of comfort versus trends versus elegance, her answer is immediate and unambiguous. Anjali Phougat said, “Timeless elegance”. Trends come and go, but elegance rooted in authenticity always remains relevant. Comfort is important too, but it should never compromise grace.”
She lives by one guiding principle when it comes to what she puts on, and it is less a style rule than a personal code. Anjali Phougat said, “Never wear anything that doesn’t feel aligned with your inner energy. If it doesn’t feel authentic, it doesn’t belong on you.”
As a designer, the well she draws from is rich and deeply personal. Anjali Phougat said, “My inspiration comes from spirituality, Indian heritage, nature, and emotional human experiences. Mythology, especially Radha-Krishna energy, plays a very deep role in my creative vision, along with the strength and grace of modern women.”
Bringing a creative vision to life while keeping it wearable and grounded is the tension every designer navigates, and she has a clear framework for how she does it. “I begin with creativity and emotion, then ground it with structure and functionality. A design must be wearable, empowering, and comfortable because true luxury is when art meets real life seamlessly,” Anjali Phougat ended.
