Shirin Sewani reflects on the tragic suicide of influencer Misha Agrawal, highlighting the intense mental toll of social media. She urges creators to prioritize real-life connections over virtual validation.
Influencer Misha Agrawal’s tragic passing at the age of 24 last month has sparked a profound conversation about the mental health challenges faced by social media creators. According to her family, Misha’s declining follower count deeply affected her self-worth and future aspirations, leading to her untimely death just two days before her 25th birthday.
In light of this, actress and content creator Shirin Sewani, known for her roles in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Naagin 2, and the web series Taj Mahal 1989, has shared her perspective on the pressures of social media. Reflecting on Misha’s passing, Shirin expressed deep sorrow and emphasised the overwhelming influence of social media on today’s youth.
Shirin Sewani stated, “This is very heartbreaking, and we’re all mourning it. I’m still in shock. I really believe that — yes — people are forgetting that social media is for us, we are not for social media. We’re getting consumed — both as audiences and as creators. It’s all about numbers, and that pressure… it can really get to your head.”
Shirin Sewani advocates for a balanced approach, urging individuals to look beyond the digital realm. She advises, “There’s a big life outside of this — there’s family, there’s so much more you can do. And the people around you — they’ve always been supportive of what you do in so many ways. They should be your strength.”
Acknowledging the challenges of pursuing a career in social media, Shirin Sewani emphasizes the importance of resilience. She encourages creators to remain steadfast, saying, “If you’ve decided to be on this journey, give it your best. And it’s okay — numbers aaj nahi hain, kal aa jaayenge… aaj hain, kal nahi honge. You cannot let this become everything in your life.”
Shirin Sewani’s reflections serve as a poignant reminder of the need for mental fortitude and the importance of maintaining a healthy perspective in the face of social media’s pervasive influence.
