Soniya Bansal on Why Mumbai Is Asia’s Happiest City
In the Time Out City Life Index 2025, Mumbai ranked the happiest city in Asia. Bigg Boss 17 fame Soniya Bansal feels that happiness goes beyond a simple emotion for Mumbai. She shared that the city makes you feel alive because every street corner offers a new possibility.
Soniya Bansal on Mumbai’s Unique Definition of Happiness
“In a city as intense as Mumbai, happiness is defined by resilience, opportunity, and the comforting feeling that you can build a life here regardless of your background. It’s that unique ‘Mumbai dream’ where the city tests you but also rewards your hustle in ways other places don’t. You can see it in the way people celebrate small victories amidst the chaos of daily life. There’s a sense of pride in just making it through a tough day and knowing you’re part of something bigger,” she said.
She further mentioned that the sheer energy of the city is infectious and said, “I think the diverse culture and strong work ethic play a massive role in that joy. There is a never-give-up spirit here that binds everyone together, whether you’re in a high-rise or a local train. You’re constantly surrounded by people who are striving for more, and that collective ambition creates a very motivating environment.”
How Diversity and Hustle Shape the City’s Joy
She added, “Plus, the food, the festivals, and the sea breeze at Marine Drive provide those necessary moments of zen. It’s a mix of the high-octane hustle and the simple pleasures that keeps the spirit high.”
Soniya believes that what really sets Mumbai apart is its incredible sense of inclusivity and belonging. She said, “You can move here from any part of the world, and within a few months, you’ll find a ‘pocket’ of the city that feels like home. It’s a true melting pot where different languages, religions, and social classes rub shoulders every single day.”
“There’s a lack of judgment here that is very liberating; people are generally too busy with their own lives to worry about what you’re doing. That freedom to be yourself while feeling part of a massive community is something very few cities can replicate,” she added.
The Spirit of Resilience and Opportunity in Mumbai
She explained that the city provides a sense of constant movement and hope. She said, “There is a rhythm to the chaos that becomes a comfort zone for many residents over time. Those small everyday wins like catching the train just in time or finding a great cutting chai actually keep people going.”
“The stress is often outweighed by the ‘human’ moments, like a stranger helping you with directions or the collective vibe of a local festival. It’s an exhausting city, for sure, but it’s an exhaustion that feels purposeful and shared,” she added.
She feels that an improved happiness level comes from better lifestyle options and the massive growth in digital and social connectivity. She said, “Even though the infrastructure is always a work in progress, the access to new cafes, co-working spaces, and entertainment has exploded. The city is becoming more livable in terms of convenience, with apps for everything making the daily grind a bit smoother.”
Finding Peace Amid Chaos: Mumbai’s Everyday Moments
“There’s also a growing awareness of mental health and work-life balance, even in a city that never sleeps. People are finding better ways to navigate the urban environment while staying connected to their social circles,” she added.
Asked if high happiness levels can coexist with challenges like congestion, cost of living, and infrastructure gaps, she said, “Absolutely, because happiness and challenges have always coexisted in the DNA of this city. Mumbaikars have a world-class ability to adapt to the chaos and still find joy in the middle of a traffic jam.”
“We complain about the rain and the rent, but we also wouldn’t trade the city’s unique vibe for a quieter, easier life elsewhere. The community spirit here acts as a safety net that makes the high cost of living feel worth the price of admission. It’s a trade-off: you give up some physical comfort for a massive amount of emotional and professional fulfillment,” Soniya ended.
