You Can’t Invent A Body, You Have To Have Lived Near It: Sambhaji Sasane

Sambhaji Sasane Reveals How He Brought Three Distinct Characters to Life in Bol Bol Rani

Playing three distinct characters in Bol Bol Rani meant Sambhaji Sasane couldn’t simply invent a body for each, he had to have lived near it, or seen it somewhere.

Sambhaji Sasane on Receiving an Unexpected Facebook Message from Director Sid Vinchurkar

The film itself began in an unlikely way. The story starts unusually. director Sid Vinchurkar found me through a Facebook message that simply said, ‘I find you interesting. I have a story with three roles. Would you be interested?’

One reading at a café in Thane, and I knew this was a different kind of film, Sambhaji Sasane said.

He credits director Sid’s background for the shape the film eventually took. Sid comes from an advertising background and has a curious mind that explores unique ideas, and you can see that thinking in the way the film is constructed, Sambhaji Sasane said.

When it came to actually building the three men physically, Sambhaji Sasane says invention alone wasn’t enough. For the bodies, you can’t invent a body. You have to have seen it somewhere or lived near it, he said.

And when it’s an imaginary character, someone I’ve never met or seen anywhere, then you conceive him from the script. The writing gives you the seed, and your imagination has to grow the body from it. Observation gives you truth; imagination gives you the characters the world hasn’t shown you yet, Sambhaji Sasane added.

The Inspiration Behind Shahir, Dravya and Lohar

Each character, he explained, came from a different source.

For Shahir, I worked with my friend Kailas Waghmare on Lavani singing and with Bhushan Korgaonkar to understand the physical tradition that comes with it. Dravya came from people I’ve met over the years. I could draw him from memory, Sambhaji Sasane said.

Lohar, meanwhile, reached furthest back. Lohar, on the other hand, came from my childhood.

I grew up watching lohars hammer iron on old anvils, and I remembered their structure, the way the body organises itself around that labour, Sambhaji Sasane said.

The final look, he says, came together as a collaboration. I designed the initial looks for all three myself and took them to Satya, our makeup designer, who refined them beautifully.

Sid welcomed every idea I brought, and that openness shaped these characters as much as anything I did, Sambhaji Sasane said.
