The journey wasn’t easy, but I have experienced every phase—the bad, the better, and the good—and I wouldn’t change any of it. Sumbul Touqeer on Audience Reactions and Character Connection
The actress believes that when viewers develop strong feelings toward a character, it reflects the success of the performance.
“Sometimes the line between the actor and the character can blur when a role deeply connects with viewers. But I believe that when audiences react strongly to your character, it means you’ve done your job well. I am proud of every character I have portrayed so far and look forward to exploring many more,” Sumbul said.
Why Negative Characters Often Face Audience Backlash
Speaking about how viewers perceive protagonists and antagonists differently, Sumbul explained that audiences often associate actors with the personalities they portray on-screen.
“I think people expect actors playing protagonists to be morally good, patient, and selfless in real life too. Similarly, actors portraying antagonists often receive criticism because viewers associate them with the negative actions of their characters,” she said.
The actress added that audiences should remember that actors are simply performing roles written in a script.
“I’ve seen people criticize negative characters intensely, but it’s important to remember that we are following a script. We bring emotions to the words we are given. Whether it’s love or hate from the audience, it’s all part of our profession,” she shared.

Despite the challenges, Sumbul finds immense satisfaction in knowing that her performances have positively impacted viewers.
“Whether it’s Imlie, Kavya, or Itti Si Khushi, I feel grateful when viewers tell me that my characters inspired them or helped them during difficult phases of their lives. Moments like these remind me why I wanted to become an actor and highlight the power of storytelling,” she concluded.
