“We Need To Make Wellness More Aspirational Than Addiction”: Gauravv Saxena On World No Tobacco Day

Entrepreneur Gauravv Saxena believes that changing the perception of health and success is key to reducing tobacco addiction, especially among young people. On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, he shares his views on the growing normalization of smoking, the influence of media, and the need for a stronger wellness culture.

Speaking about the increasing social acceptance of smoking among young people, Gauravv Saxena expressed concern over the trend and its long-term consequences. “It is concerning to observe how smoking has transitioned from a private habit to a socially accepted behavior among youth.

The normalisation often stems from peer pressure and the desire to fit into certain social circles, which frequently ignore the long-term health consequences. While social freedom is important, it shouldn’t come at the cost of one’s well-being. We need to shift the narrative back to valuing longevity and physical vitality, traits that are essential for a high-performance life,” he said.

The entrepreneur also reflected on the portrayal of smoking in films and digital content, emphasizing the responsibility that creators carry when depicting harmful habits on screen. “As someone who creates content, I prioritise authenticity, but that does not mean I am comfortable promoting habits that are objectively detrimental to health.

If a project required it, I would likely decline or seek an alternative way to portray a character’s struggle or personality without glamorising smoking. Creators have a responsibility to be mindful of the ‘cool factor’ often associated with on-screen smoking, especially considering the influence it can have on impressionable audiences,” Gauravv Saxena shared.

Why Anti-Tobacco Ads Continue To Matter

Addressing the debate around anti-tobacco advertisements that appear before films and online content, Gauravv Saxena acknowledged that many viewers find them repetitive but believes they continue to serve an important purpose. “The irritation people feel toward those ads is often a reaction to the repetitive nature of the messaging rather than a disagreement with the medical facts.

However, these warnings are necessary. While they may be annoying to watch repeatedly, their presence acts as a persistent reality check. If we didn’t have them, the desensitisation to tobacco would be even worse. It is a classic case of balancing artistic expression with public health messaging,” he explained.

When asked what more can be done to tackle persistent smoking habits, Gauravv Saxena stressed that awareness campaigns alone are not enough and that deeper lifestyle interventions are needed. “Most smokers are already aware of the risks, so awareness alone isn’t enough.

We need to address the root causes. For many people, smoking becomes a coping mechanism for stress, anxiety, or boredom. Promoting healthier alternatives such as meditation, sound healing, fitness, and other wellness practices can help fill that void,” he said.

Community Support Can Help People Overcome Addiction

He further emphasised the importance of support systems and cultural change. “Community support plays a crucial role because overcoming addiction is difficult to do in isolation. Creating supportive and non-judgmental environments can make a significant difference.

At the same time, we need to do a better job of positioning a healthy lifestyle as something aspirational. When people begin to see wellness as a tool for success, confidence, and longevity, they are far more likely to invest in their health rather than addictive habits,” Gauravv Saxena concluded.
