She is undoubtedly the franchise’s lifeblood, offering a degree of genuineness and vulnerability that audiences find incredibly compelling. Nushrratt Bharuccha has once again shown why she is one of the most intriguing actors in the business today with her unquestionable talent and commitment!

Downtown Mirror India’s Shikha Duggal brings you one-on-one with Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety fame….

Shikha Duggal: In the Indian horror scene, Chhorii was a genre-defining movie. With Chhorii 2, you’re not only going back to see the character again; you’re also going deeper into her story. What has changed and what is still the same about Sakshi?

Nushrratt Bharuccha: What’s wonderful about sticking with the same character? Actually, not much has changed because the traits are still the same! We have only given my character more depth for the sequel and I believe my fans have grasped her from the Chhorii story. It’s good that the screenwriter didn’t have to start from scratch! It’s time to discover if she has recovered from the trauma in the sequel. This is what happened to her in the original; how did she survive and how did she protect her co-star, who was portraying her child? Reenacting my role required a lot of research, particularly when it came to providing reflexes, as the script called for me to act after a break. Furthermore, I was not expected to behave in a superhero manner! I was meant to focus on developing my maternal instincts. You will witness a far more extensive cult in Chhorii 2.

Shikha Duggal: Through supernatural horror, Chhorii explored patriarchal violence and women’s pain. Are there any new topics explored in the sequel?

Nushrratt Bharuccha: We started this sequel adventure because my film will once again bring attention to the larger, more sinister societal practices that are being attempted in society. It’s a really real thing. I decided on the pure horror genre since it also allows me to be loyal to my acting! There aren’t any jump scares mixed together to give you the impression that you’re watching a scary movie. The horror genre should, in my opinion, be presented in a way that is gut-wrenching.

Shikha Duggal: Now, what attracts you to projects?

Nushrratt Bharuccha: I prefer to read the movie for its own sake. I have never signed a movie based on how I will be perceived once it is released, not even on the basis of whether it’s a wise career choice. The only thing left to decide is if I have to be the face for this story and tell it aloud. These days, that’s all I care about in my filmography. At the end of the day, it’s just the screenplay and how it relates to me.

Shikha Duggal: Did you ever feel like the industry genuinely valued you during your career, or is that struggle still ongoing?

Nushrratt Bharuccha: Great screenplays are being offered to me and I’m getting interesting stuff. I evaluate the industry’s numerical game based on its worth rather than its words or numbers. The moment I stop receiving proposals, I will begin to doubt my value in the industry! There is no comparison to the large banners, of course, and I say this honestly and without bitterness. Despite how sour that may sound, I have never had a significant banner role before! I am really appreciative of the new directors and producers that helped launch my career. You know what? In the industry, I’m still making ends meet! I’m still doing it.

Shikha Duggal: Soha Ali Khan is introduced in Chhorii 2 in a completely new persona. How does playing opposite someone whose energy is so different affect your own performance as an actor?

Nushrratt Bharuccha: Well, I was meant to collaborate with Soha on another project, but for a variety of reasons, it didn’t work out, but here I am with her. Her role in Chhorii 2 is my main co-star! My sources tell me that Soha had a similar reaction to my surprise at learning that she was joining the horror genre. Soha asked the team, “Are you guys sure you want me to come on board for this genre?” with a startle! They have really fresh ideas for their story and I’m sure the directors saw something in Soha to convince her to do this. I was the same example while the original was being made; therefore, Soha is a perfect fit for the role of the “out of the box” example. Before Chhoriii, no one else had ever asked me to participate in the horror genre!

Shikha Duggal: What acting skills have you acquired from performing in this genre that you would not have acquired elsewhere?

Nushrratt Bharuccha: All of my characters up to this point, including Akeli, are actually not that relatable to me. They are not characteristics that are easily lived! I didn’t recognise the character from Pyaar Ka Punchnama at first. This was unlike any girl I had ever met in real life! I thought, “How do I do this now?” when they made the role much more dramatic in the sequel. A significant portion of my work involves relying on my imagination to find a role! I can already see a green screen in my head (she laughs out). Since I was intended to portray a lost girl in part one, I didn’t read the script to make it into a horror movie! Even in real life, I never know how I’ll respond if I actually see a ghost. You know what I mean? I occasionally had no idea what was going on in the scenes. I was just following directions! I had to yell to my director, “Sir, mai yahaan hoon,” numerous times when I was likewise absorbed in the scenes we were doing. It’s funny, I know. In particular, I also had no idea what Soha would look like in this one.

Shikha Duggal: What role do you see yourself playing in the future of Indian horror and where do you think it is going?

Nushrratt Bharuccha: I’m not even exaggerating when I say that the horror genre has advanced significantly. I’ll explain why! Before the emergence of horror-comedies, only films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama were popular. Then, a new genre called “horrex”—which combined sexual and horror elements—seemed to emerge. Furthermore, I’ve never fully grasped this genre. Since then, the genre has advanced significantly in our industry, leading to the creation of the phrase “horror-comedies.” From then on, horror films with a creature theme also became popular! Take Bhediya, for instance. People used to be preoccupied with trying to figure out the reasoning behind these genres, but that is no longer the case. Consider the case of Bhediya. It is no longer the case that people are consumed with attempting to understand the rationale behind these genres. They have successfully established and maintained a market on their own! And in India, of course, under excellent guidance.
