Dos 

  • Eat meals together as a family : During Ganpati, try to have your meals together with the family. It is a good time to sit together and enjoy the festival.
  • Follow the proper shubh muhurat : The pooja should be done at the proper shubh muhurat. Follow the muhurat given for the Ganpati rituals.
  • Worship paan leaves and supari : During the pooja, paan leaves and supari should also be worshipped.
  • Worship haldi to overcome obstacles : ⁠If there is any vighna or obstacle, haldi should be worshipped. It is considered good for keeping Brihaspati and Mangal strong.
  • ⁠Offer modaks to Lord Ganpati : Modaks should be offered to Ganpati.
  • Respect the Pandit or Guru : At the same time, one should also respect the Pandit ji, as respecting the Guru is believed to make Brihaspati stronger.
  • Place Ganpati in the right direction : ⁠Ganpati should be kept in the North or North-East direction.
  • Prepare the kalash correctly : The kalash should have mango leaves and a coconut with a swastik on it.
  • Begin with Sankalp and Pran Pratishtha : ⁠Before starting the pooja, first take the sankalp by saying your name and gotra. After the sankalp comes Pran Pratishtha. Once that is done, the idol can be decorated and the pooja can begin.
  • Blow the shankh during the pooja : The shankh should be blown during the pooja.
  • Worship Lakshmi and Saraswati along with Ganpati : Along with Ganpati, Lakshmi and Saraswati should also be kept and worshipped.
  • Perform “Gauri Shankarye Namah” : Gauri Shankarye Namah should also be performed during the pooja.
  • ⁠Keep the pooja space clean : Keep the Ganpati idol and the pooja space clean throughout the festival.
  • Offer fresh flowers and fruits : ⁠Flowers, fruits and other offerings should be fresh and offered with devotion.
  • ⁠Encourage family participation : Family members should participate in the pooja rather than leaving all the rituals to one person.
  • Maintain devotion during visarjan : ⁠On the day of visarjan, the same respect and devotion should be maintained while bidding farewell to Ganpati.

Don’ts

  • Don’t perform the pooja without checking the shubh muhurat : Do not do the Ganpati pooja without checking the proper shubh muhurat.
  • Don’t skip Sankalp and Pran Pratishtha : ⁠Do not miss the important steps of sankalp and Pran Pratishtha during the sthapana.
  • Don’t ignore the direction of the idol : Do not keep Ganpati anywhere without considering the direction. North or North-East is considered suitable.
  • Don’t create negativity at home : Try not to have unnecessary arguments or create negativity at home during the festival.
  • ⁠Don’t treat Ganpati as merely a decoration : Do not treat Ganpati only as a decoration. The rituals and the faith behind them are important too.
  • Avoid looking at the moon on September 14 : On September 14, looking at the moon is not advised, as Ganpati Sthapana takes place on this day.
