Ind vs Eng : Shubman Gill Scripts History With Third Straight Test Ton, Joins Virat Kohli In Elite List

Shubman Gill’s captaincy debut came in the first Test against England at Leeds where he scored an impressive 147. He carried this form into the next match, scoring an unbeaten 114 in Birmingham which helped India reach 310/5 at stumps on Day 1.

India captain Shubman Gill hits third consecutive Test century vs England, joins Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid in elite list of record holders.

Historic series!

Shubman Gill has etched his name in cricket history by scoring his third consecutive Test century against England, a feat that places him among some of Indian cricket’s greatest legends.

On the opening day of the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, the young Indian captain smashed an unbeaten 114 off 199 balls, continuing his dream run in the ongoing series. Earlier, he had scored 147 at Leeds and a century in Dharamshala (2024) — making it three tons on the trot against the English side in the longest format.

Captaincy Debut with a Bang

In what is his first Test series as India’s captain, Shubman Gill seems to be thriving under pressure. With this century, Gill becomes only the third Indian captain—after Vijay Hazare (1951–52) and Mohammad Azharuddin (1990)—to register centuries in consecutive Test matches against England.

Even more impressively, he joins the elite company of Virat Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar, and Vijay Hazare in recording centuries in his first two Tests as captain. Kohli, notably, scored three in his captaincy debut series as well.

Consecutive Tons Against England

Shubman Gill’s achievement is a rare milestone in Indian cricket. Only a few Indian batters have ever scored three consecutive Test centuries against England. He now shares this distinction with:

Mohammad Azharuddin (1984-85)

Dilip Vengsarkar (1985-86)

Rahul Dravid (2002 & 2008-11)

India Ends Day 1 Strong at Edgbaston

Riding on Shubman Gill’s composed century and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s impressive 87-run knock, India ended Day 1 of the second Test on a strong note at 310/5, asserting early dominance in the match.

What’s Next for Gill?

At just 25 years old, Shubman Gill’s batting brilliance and leadership promise a bright future. With three centuries in a row and several records already falling at his feet, the cricketing world will be watching closely to see just how far this new captain can go.
