Why Sumit Arora Chose Office Office Chali Musaddi Ki Beti

Sumit Arora did not need much convincing when Eagle Films’ Office Office Chali Musaddi Ki Beti came his way. The show had two things going for it from the very beginning, a character worth playing and a production house he already knew and trusted completely.

He said, “The main reason was Eagle Films. I have worked with them before and have had a great experience with them. I’ve already done two or three projects with them, and honestly, I have rarely come across a production house better than them. So that was the biggest reason for taking up the show. The second reason was that the character was really good.”

How Patel Became One Of The Most Unique Characters

The character he stepped into, Patel, the Gujarati man in the office, gave him something specific and textured to work with. Sumit Arora said, “Along with our director, Rajan Sir, we decided to give him a subtle Gujarati touch. Since he is Gujarati, we kept a slight tone and flavor in the way he speaks. There are different characters in the office, and we tried to give each one their own unique variation.”

“One very popular trait of my character is that no matter what the situation is, he somehow manages to come up with two different angles or meanings out of it. That characteristic is something I really like about my character,” Sumit Arora added.

Why Great Comedy Requires Precision And Timing

On what comedy actually demands from a performer, Arora places it within something larger than just timing or technique. Sumit Arora said, “Not just comedy, but any form of art is serious business.” If you take your art seriously, only then will you be able to do it well. Whether it is painting, sculpting, music, or dance, if you are not serious about it, then it simply becomes a joke.”

“And when it comes to comedy, it becomes even more serious because you have to create humor in a way that it does not turn into something meaningless. You have to make people laugh in such a way that it never feels like people are laughing at you. It requires a lot of precision, perfection, and timing,” Sumit Arora added.

His approach to playing a comedy character, he admits, is not dramatically different from how he approaches anything else. The adjustments are subtle but deliberate. Sumit Arora said, “My approach mostly remains the same for every kind of character. The only thing that changes with a comedy character is that we try to bring a little more energy into the expressions and dialogue delivery.”

“The pauses are fewer, and the style is often slightly different from normal. I try to twist the words a little or change the way a line is delivered because I feel that even a small shift in presentation can make something much funnier,” Sumit Arora added.

The Balance Between Rehearsal And Spontaneity

On the rehearsal question, he offers a perspective that cuts against the assumption that more preparation always means a better result. Sumit Arora said, “Comedy is such that sometimes it feels like if you rehearse too much, things become stale or mechanical. There are some scenes that need a lot of rehearsal, and for those it is better to rehearse properly and in detail.”

“At the same time, there are some scenes that work better when they are kept raw and spontaneous. Sometimes it helps to under-rehearse a little, so there is a sense of freshness and even a bit of suspense about what is going to happen next. That unpredictability often adds to the fun,” Sumit Arora added.

He also has a considered view on the broader landscape of comedy on Indian television and what it has lost by fragmenting itself by age group rather than staying rooted in the family. “I feel there should be more shows that you can sit and watch with your family, because there are very few genres that we can enjoy together as a family, and comedy is one of them,” Sumit Arora ended.
