08 Feb 2026, New Delhi: The 25th Bharat Rang Mahotsav (BRM) 2026, world’s biggest theatre international festival organised by the National School of Drama (NSD) stunned audiences, delivering one of its most diverse and high-octane festival days yet. The day became the talk of the theatre community as six critically acclaimed productions, spanning Hindi, Kannada, Bengali, Assamese, and Bagheli, unfolded back-to-back, showcasing India’s unmatched creative range and cultural depth.

The festival day opened with Chandani Raatein, written and directed by Purva Naresh, presented by Aarambh Mumbai Productions. The Hindi play captivated theatre lovers with its emotionally rich storytelling and nuanced performances.

Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2026 Draws Massive Public Response With Pan-India Theatre Showcase

Adding a vibrant regional layer, Parijata, written by K. Y. Narayanswami and directed by B. Jayashree for Spandana (Bengaluru), transported audiences into the heart of Kannada theatre with its compelling narrative style.

Young audiences were treated to U-Jaala – Ek Chhat Mil Jaye Agar.., a devised play led by Sapna Ahuja and supported by Nauman for NSD TIE and the Sunday Club. The production struck an instant chord with its fresh, imaginative treatment and relatable themes.

Later in the day, the stage lit up with Bhanu, Anton Chekhov’s timeless work re-envisioned by director Suman Mukhopadhyay for Shyambazar Mukhomukhi, Kolkata. The Bengali play impressed viewers with its powerful reinterpretation of a classic.

Assam’s cultural identity took centre stage with Dronacharya, Sri Guruve Namah, written by Mrinmoy Bhuyan and directed by Gunakar Dev Goswami for Purbaranga, Guwahati. The Assamese play earned applause for its spiritual depth and strong performances.

The evening concluded with the majestic Anand Raghunandan, written by Maharaja Vishwanath Singh and directed by Shubham Bari and Amit Shukla for AW Society, Satna. Presented in Bagheli and Hindi, the production delivered a grand and emotionally charged finale to the festival day.

The 25th edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2026, spans 25 days from 27 January to 20 February 2026, showcasing over 277 productions across 228 Indian and international languages, including several underrepresented tongues. The festival brings together national, international and regional productions, with participation from 9 countries and theatre groups from every state and union territory.

National School of Drama’s Vision of Inclusivity and Democratisation of Theatre

Celebrating the rich diversity of Indian theatre, Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2026 will showcase performances by children’s groups, tribal communities, and artists from marginalised backgrounds, reaffirming NSD’s strong commitment to inclusivity and the universal reach of theatre.

The National School of Drama has consistently worked towards expanding access to theatre and making it more democratic. In line with this vision, NSD recently launched Rang Akash, an internet radio platform dedicated to promoting theatre, along with its OTT platform Natyam, which brings some of its most treasured productions to audiences across the country.
