Adrija Roy Opens Up About Love And Relationships

Television star Adrija Roy talks about sports, acting and spirituality
Adrija Roy

Q1. You were a national-level sprinter in West Bengal. How does that athlete’s discipline help you survive the grueling schedules of daily soaps?

Adrija Roy. Honestly, I feel my sports background has helped me more than anything else in life. When you are an athlete, you don’t really have the option to give up just because you are tired. You train your mind to keep going, no matter what. Daily soaps are also like that. The hours are long, sometimes very unpredictable, and physically it can get exhausting. But somewhere, my body and mind are already used to that discipline. I know how to stay focused, how to manage my energy, and most importantly, how to not complain and just do my work sincerely. That athlete mindset still stays with me every single day on set.

Q2. Moving from the Kolkata industry to lead Hindi shows like Imlie and Kundali Bhagya is a major shift. What was the most daunting part of starting over in Mumbai?

Adrija Roy. The toughest part was starting from zero again. In Kolkata, I had a certain comfort and confidence because I knew how things worked there. But when I came to Mumbai, everything felt new. New people, new way of working, and of course, a lot more competition. Giving auditions again, facing rejections, and not knowing what will happen next — that phase was not easy at all. There were moments when I questioned myself, but I think that’s also what pushes you to grow. I just kept going, one day at a time, and slowly things started falling into place.

Q3. How do you handle the pressure and comparison that comes with joining India’s #1 show mid-way?

Adrija Roy. There is definitely pressure when you join a show like Kundali Bhagya mid-way because the audience is already so connected to the story and characters. Comparisons are bound to happen, and I think it’s natural. But I try not to overthink it. If I start focusing on what people are comparing or saying, I will lose my own space as an actor. So I just focus on my character, understand her emotions, and perform honestly. Over time, I believe the audience sees that honesty and slowly accepts you.

Q4. Your parents initially wanted you in sports. Can you describe the moment you saw their “disapproval” turn into pride after your first hit?

Adrija Roy. That change didn’t happen in one moment, it was very gradual. Initially, they were worried because acting is such an uncertain field. But when they saw me in Imlie and people started recognizing me and appreciating my work, I could feel that shift. The way they started talking about my work, the way they supported me more openly — that was very emotional for me. I think for any child, making your parents feel proud is the biggest achievement, and that feeling is something I will always carry with me.

Q5. You started 2026 with a spiritual trip to Vrindavan. How has your definition of “peace” changed as you’ve gained fame?

Adrija Roy. My trip to Vrindavan really changed something inside me. Earlier, I used to think that once you achieve certain things, you will feel peaceful and satisfied. But now I feel peace has nothing to do with success or fame. It’s more about how calm and stable you feel within yourself. This industry is beautiful, but it can also be very fast and overwhelming. That trip made me slow down and understand the importance of being present and grateful. Now, I value that inner calm much more than anything else.

Q6. After keeping things private, you recently confirmed you’re no longer single. How does your partner support your hectic work-life?

Adrija Roy. I have always been someone who likes to keep personal things private, but yes, I am in a good space. What really matters to me is understanding, and I am lucky to have that. My schedule is not normal at all, and sometimes it can get very hectic. So having someone who doesn’t question that, who simply supports you and is there for you emotionally, makes a big difference. It’s not always about big gestures, even small things like checking in on you after a long day mean a lot.

Q7. You call Rupali Ganguly “Maa” in real life. What is the most valuable off-screen lesson she has taught you about longevity in this industry?

Adrija Roy. Rupali Ganguly has been like a guiding force for me. The biggest thing I have learned from her is how to stay grounded, no matter how successful you become. She is someone who gives her 100% every single day and treats everyone with so much respect. She always says that consistency and humility are what keep you going for a long time in this industry. Watching her work and the way she carries herself teaches you so much without her even saying too much.

Q8. You’ve mentioned you want to constantly reinvent yourself. Is there a specific genre or character—perhaps something dark or grey—you are eyeing next?

Adrija Roy. Yes, definitely. I feel as an actor, you should never feel too comfortable in one space. I would really love to explore a grey or slightly negative character. Those roles have so many layers and give you a chance to show different emotions. Positive roles are beautiful, but somewhere I feel experimenting with something darker will challenge me more and help me grow as an actor.

Q9. With the rise of layered narratives on streaming, do you see yourself moving away from the “daily soap lead” image soon?

Adrija Roy. I think OTT has opened up a lot of exciting opportunities for actors, and I would definitely love to explore that space. But I don’t think I want to move away from daily soaps completely. They have given me my identity and so much love from the audience. For me, it’s about balance and choosing the right projects at the right time. I believe in growing step by step rather than rushing into something just because it’s trending.
