For actor Kalyan Mrinal Choudhury, the appeal of theatre lies in the immediate, unspoken connection between performers and their audience.

Shiv Shakti: Ek Divya Pranay Katha Explores Faith and Surrender

As he prepares to bring Shiv Shakti: Ek Div-ya Pranay Katha to the stage, he believes the experience offers something that cannot be replicated on screen.

The screen has its own magic and limitations.

Our attention span while watching something on screen isn’t the same as in theatre, where we see people alive on stage and witness an exchange of emotions happening at the same time, without any wall in between, Kalyan Mrinal Choudhury said.

Kalyan describes theatre as a shared space where the boundaries between performers and viewers can sometimes dissolve.

We artists welcome the audience into our world, and sometimes we break the realm and visit their world.

That way, the audience and artists are in a cordial and unspoken relationship.

That is the magic of the stage, Kalyan Mrinal Choudhury said.

In Shiv Shakti, he hopes audiences will connect with the deeper philosophy behind the story.

The philosophy of Sanatan is way beyond a religion. Our play celebrates the idea of surrendering to be one with God.

Then God bless us with abundance, and if we are corrupted in the heart, the boon will turn into a curse, Kalyan Mrinal Choudhury said.

Kalyan believes the play’s message is particularly relevant to young people dealing with the pressures and challenges of contemporary life.

Why Kalyan Mrinal Choudhury Believes Spirituality Matters to Today’s Youth

I think that in today’s time, especially the youth, who are going through a lot of trauma, they need to understand why they fall prey to problems and what can save them from them, Kalyan Mrinal Choudhury said.

He points to the struggles faced even by divine incarnations in mythology, suggesting that their journeys offer lessons in faith and resilience.

Even the incarnations of Gods go through different problems, and they evolve into superhuman beings when they surrender themselves to God through their prayers.

God guides them towards a much better position than they could have ever imagined, Kalyan Mrinal Choudhury said.

However, he feels that the volume of modern content can distract people from spiritual traditions.

But too much content has overshadowed our spiritual belief system, and we have become victims of many borrowed or man-made ideologies, Kalyan Mrinal Choudhury added.

Kalyan’s theatre experience includes international and Indian productions.

His projects include Henry IV, The Taming of the Shrew and Measure for Measure with Prague Shakespeare Company in the Czech Republic.

He has also worked with Clowns Without Borders in Sweden, the USA and India on productions including Bags of Gags and Panchatantra, alongside Ek Radha with Panashe Media and Pyjama Party and Rangrez with Film and Theatre Society.

Despite this experience, he approaches his work with humility and a strong sense of faith.

I do not dare to be in the character during rehearsals without the will of God, who guides me to play even a little of whatever I am doing, he said.

For him, the growing interest in mythological theatre is meaningful when it leaves audiences with something to reflect on.

I would say the experience is worthwhile if it shifts something within them when they leave, Kalyan Mrinal Choudhury said.

Kalyan also shares a close bond with the team behind the production, particularly Aresso Theatre and producer-writer Nandini Thakkar.

He prefers to describe their relationship in more personal terms. I strongly disagree with calling it Aresso Theatre and Nandini ji my producer.

I would prefer to call it Aresso Home and Nandini ji Mom.

The warmth that Nandini ji, Haripriya, and Parrth shower upon me persuades me to offer the best of my capacity, Kalyan Mrinal Choudhury ended.
