Somy Ali On Returning To Acting: My Roles Must Have Depth And Challenge Societal Norms

Somy Ali, the former Bollywood actress turned activist, has fully dedicated her life to philanthropy through her non-profit organization, No More Tears (NMT), which works to rescue victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. Despite her focus on this mission, the actress within her occasionally resurfaces.

When asked if she misses being in front of the camera, Somy Ali admits, “I do now, because I have so many ideas. I’ve written six scripts, and in two, I play very different, age-appropriate characters. But to bring these to life, I need a male actor, a director of photography, and a full production team. These films aren’t typical — they’re meant for film festivals and conventions.”

While she’s open to acting, Somy Ali explains that she’s selective with the offers she receives. she says, “Forming Somy Ali Productions, LLC was easy, but securing funding and paying a production team isn’t. I simply don’t have the resources right now. I want roles that challenge societal judgments and provoke thought. Otherwise, I’m content with my work in NMT, saving lives until the universe gives me another chance to act.”

The Anth actress emphasizes the importance of depth in her roles. Somy Ali shares, “I look for characters that resonate deeply, like the lyrics of Sonu Nigam’s song ‘Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin,’ which has multiple layers of meaning that only a true philosopher might understand. My roles must have that depth, challenging societal norms and opening minds.”

Reflecting on the evolution of the entertainment industry, she notes, “I think it’s improved by about 45%, but the industry can’t ignore what appeals to the masses. Even in 2025, films like Swades wouldn’t have the same impact. Movies like Monsoon Wedding or Arth would struggle to be blockbusters today. The masses still dominate the box office, so while a film like Pink is rare, I don’t see them becoming mainstream — at least not in my lifetime.”
