Smriti Khaannaa On Student Protests, Exam Transparency and the Responsibility of Public Figures
As the Cockroach Janta Party continues its protest at Jantar Mantar over alleged irregularities in competitive exams, Smriti Khaannaa, who has been part of shows like Ganesh Leela, Tere Ishq Mein Ghayal, has weighed in on students taking to the streets, and on how far she believes public support for such causes should go.
Her position is layered, backing for students raising genuine concerns, paired with caution about who else is standing behind them.
I fully support students raising genuine concerns. If there are issues in the examination system, they deserve answers. But I don’t support students being used by people with political or ideological agendas.
Why Peaceful Protest Is a Democratic Right but Violence Is Not
Many young people join protests without even knowing the complete facts. Before stepping onto the streets, understand the issue you’re standing for, Smriti Khaannaa said.
On whether celebrities have a responsibility to speak up on issues affecting the country’s youth, Smriti Khaannaa was careful to draw a line between amplifying and inflaming.
As public figures, we shouldn’t add fuel to the fire. We should encourage young people to think independently, verify facts, and stay away from propaganda. Our responsibility is to promote awareness, not outrage, she said.
Smriti Khaannaa on the Responsibility of Celebrities During Public Movements
With fellow public figures such as Shabana Azmi, Shobha De and Prakash Raj coming forward in support of student-led movements, Smriti Khaannaa pointed to the scale of influence celebrities carry.
Celebrities can influence millions, so they should be extremely careful. Instead of blindly supporting trends on social media, they should encourage people to ask questions, verify information, and avoid becoming part of campaigns that create unnecessary divisions, she said.
On Sonam Wangchuk’s use of hunger strikes and peaceful protest to draw attention to causes he believes in, she defended the right to protest while drawing a clear boundary.
Peaceful protest is every citizen’s democratic right. But the moment protests become violent, public property is damaged, or communities are divided, the purpose is lost. Education should never become an excuse for chaos or hatred, Smriti Khaannaa said.

As for what it would take to restore students’ confidence in the examination system amid allegations of irregularities, she called for transparency without letting unverified claims take over the narrative.
If there are allegations of irregularities, they should be investigated transparently and action should be taken.
At the same time, we shouldn’t allow rumours or politically motivated narratives to destroy students’ faith in the entire system without evidence, Smriti Khaannaa ended.
