Nobody Wants Gyan-We Slip It In With Entertainment: Shiv Sagar On Storytelling In The Digital Age

Shiv Sagar shares how his family blends mythology with modern storytelling by delivering knowledge subtly, like a “sugar-coated pill.”

He also highlights the need for short-form, mobile-friendly content to engage today’s fast-paced audience.

Ramanand Sagar’s Sagar World Multimedia has long been a pioneer in India’s mythological television space, with iconic shows like Ramayan and Shri Krishna shaping generations. Now led by his grandson Shiv Sagar, the legacy continues with new shows like Kakbhushundi Ramayan and Kaamdhenu Gaumata currently airing on TV.

Shiv Sagar reveals that the family’s storytelling philosophy has always been rooted in balancing education with entertainment.

“We’ve always believed in giving knowledge like a sugar-coated pill,” Shiv Sagar says, adding, “Nobody wants to hear gyan or attend a satsang. Kids want action, emotions, entertainment so we give them all that and slip in about 10% of gyan. They don’t even realize they’re learning while being entertained. That’s been our family’s formula for three generations.”

Understanding the shift in how content is consumed today, Shiv Sagar emphasised the need for format innovation. He says, “Today’s audience has a shorter attention span and watches most content on the go. That’s why we’re making 10–12 minute episodes for YouTube. Vertical and short-form formats are the future, especially for smartphone users watching while commuting or during work breaks.”

Shiv Sagar further added that traditional TV viewing habits are quickly fading. “Scheduled appointment viewing has become nearly impossible with how hectic life is today,” he said.

As Sagar World evolves with the times, it remains clear that the core values of blending wisdom with engaging storytelling continue to guide its path.
