Ahead of Father’s Day on June 21, Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi, currently seen on Laughter Chefs Season 3, opened up about his father and the role he played in shaping the man he has become. He believes one can never thank their father because their efforts and sacrifices are far more than one can imagine.
The Life Lesson That Stayed With Him Forever
On what he wishes he had thanked his father for sooner, Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi said, “This Father’s Day, there’s something that you can’t thank a father for; you can only seek his blessings. I only wish that my father were there to see this date, the kind of glory that I’m being showered upon by people of the country and the world. It would have been fun, but every journey has its end, and that’s what happened.”
“I think he was my pillar. The pillar shapes the family, stands in front of the family, and takes up the onus of everything in the family. He’s the one who actually builds a family. As a child, he built me up into a strong human being, which is why I’m here and doing many things,” Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi added.
There was also a lesson that stayed with him long after he left home for college. Talking about something his father did that he only came to understand as an adult, he said, “There was one thing my father taught me in very simple words. A few months before I went away for my hotel management course, he made me sit beside him and said, “Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi, we don’t understand anything that you are doing. None of us are into hospitality, so we don’t know anything.” But he shared this beautiful saying with me: “Success is yours and failure is yours, so you have to decide what you want to choose.”
How Harpal Singh Sokhi’s Father Shaped His Success
“That stayed with me, and I believe it helped me build whatever I am. Very simple words, but very powerful, teaching me what is right and to follow that path,” Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi added.
Speaking about the quality he hopes to carry forward, he said, “I think the quality I would have from my father is how he kept the family together, even the extended family. That helped me know how big my family was. He was also known for one thing very well and he would sort out problems of people across Kharagpur, where we lived.
“He and his father, my grandfather, were known as a virtual court. People would call both of them to sort out things, family disputes across the small town we lived in. They were a powerful duo and were known for this particular thing, always called to settle matters across the small town,” Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi added.
